EDUCATION REVIEW OFFICE
TE TARI AROTAKE MATAURANGA
19 November 2009
To the Parents and Community of Bishopdale Community Preschool
These are the findings of the Education Review Office’s latest report on Bishopdale Community Preschool.
Bishopdale Community Preschool provides good quality education and care for children. The centre is licensed to provide education and care to children from 10 weeks of age to six years of age from 8am to 4pm. A committee of parents and the centre supervisor manages the centre.
Since the 2007 ERO review, teachers have established relationships with other local early childhood services. Teachers now use a range of strategies to extend children’s thinking skills. Further developing the way they plan for children’s learning and involve parents and children in assessment continues to be a focus for the teachers.
Children and their families are warmly welcomed by friendly and caring teachers. Relationships between children are positive and sustaining. Teachers provide positive role models to children through the way they interact with one another and with children.
Other positive features of the centre include:
• Planned learning experiences that provide a clear link from children’s interests to the programme provided for children;
• Children’s sense of belonging;
• Flexible and relaxed child-centered routines; and
• The use of te reo Māori in the nursery. |
Teachers in the preschool use some te reo and tikanga Māori in the programme and in their interactions with children. Children transitioning from the nursery have a well-developed repertoire of te reo Māori which teachers in the preschool need to build on. The manager and teachers have identified this as a next step for teachers.
The next steps to build on good practice are for management and teachers to;
• Extend assessment practices to minimize the variation in the quality of assessment;
• Strengthen curriculum self-review processes so that review becomes embedded in teachers’ practice with a focus on outcomes for children; and
• Formalize policies and procedures to reflect New Zealand’s bicultural partnership.
During the on-site stage of the review, ERO identified some aspects of health and safety documentation that need to be addressed. These are listed in section 5 of the report. Since the onsite stage of the review the licensee has provided evidence that these matters have been rectified.
Further Action
ERO is confident that the service is being managed in the interests of children. Therefore ERO is likely to review the service again as part of the regular review cycle.
